"Who can come?"- Influx of foreginers to Australia to make their fortune
"No Pain, No Gain"- Lifestyles of miners, sacrifices, dangers
"They can't live without"- Store keepers and produce providers (Merchants) affect on ther business
"Streets of Gold"- Boom of cities and regional centers due to successful mining (Bendigo, Ballarat)
" A taste of the times"- In schol field trip- costumes, re-enactments, cooking in cast iron ketteles over fire, panning for Gold ( sandpit), making damper, etc.
" In their shoes"- Field Trip- Sovereign Hill- I had another thought that we make this a camp?

  • Describe symbols/emblems of national life e.g. The Eureka Flag

  • Describe roles of some leaders and government rep ( how Peter Lalor went on a become a member of parliament)
What questions are needed to work towards major topic understandings
  • Why did people head to the gold fields?
  • Why is the gold rush important in Australian History?
  • What symbols/emblems came out of the period and what do they mean?
  • Why did the "Eureka Stockade" happen and what does it mean for us today?
  • What is the difference between a rule and a law?

  • Reading activities aimed at giving students the knowledge they will need to make the link between the events on the goldfield and current Australian society?
  • Australian Spirit Posters, Students brainstorm aspects of Australia that contribute to Australian values and spirit. They create a poster highlighting the most important aspects

I was thinking about grade 4 as well.
Excursion to Ballarat is great idea.
In the Excursion they could;
  • look for the gold experience.
  • Observe and taking photos of People, building and cloth.
  • Making a poster about what they saw and history about gold rush after coming back form excursion with small group.
  • Presentaion.

we could look at old Australia and now days Australia and make a poster (?) about how it changed now and olden days...

But your ideas are too good and can't think more than that....Well done!

Student to display evidence of the use of planners to track their understanding of the research they complete during the term.
Assessment tasks
  • Comment on how each role was filled in their learning journal
  • Demonstrate their knowledge of events on the goldfield and current Australian Society?
History and Geography- Assessment Tasks
  • Produce a letter set during the gold rush describing the events of the Eureka Stockdale.
  • Assessment of the comprehension levels based on topic reading
  • Link Topic talk/oral presentation to the diorama
  • Students assessment linked to the production of the diorma
